"I'm
With Busey" First Episode
Kudos
to all the brave men and women who were willing to work with
Gary Busey in order to bring us this brilliant, high-concept
reality show. I wish I were a part of it. The
premiere episode of "I'm With Busey" was a marvelous
exploration of awkward humor.
In
the first episode, Adam meets his idol, Gary, and learns what
it takes to be a man. It was
originally filmed as the pilot and was not meant to air, but
I'm thankful they changed their minds. (Even better,
I've been assured that future episodes will be much more
narrative in character.)

Gary
is a fountain of comical strangeness, celebrating his Native
American ancestry (read his biography here)
by using a rain-stick as a maraca. He also uses his
traditional spears to fight a frightened Adam. Gary's
just like that. He's a physical guy.
At
lunch we learn that Gary likes to eat in the dark for the
adventure of it, an image I find hilarious. Later, Gary
decides to dress up as a woman to discover what's special
about femininity (his idea). Let me tell you, Gary makes
a believable but extremely ugly woman, and he was certainly
looking at Adam like he loved him as they danced
together. Afterwards, Gary concluded that what's so
special about women is that they're unique. Deep.
This episode also includes a high-octane paintball fight in
which Gary and Adam team up against some guys who plaster them
head to toe.
The
premiere episode was promising--hilarious, if
fragmented. Luckily, the upcoming episodes promise to be
much more narrative in character. Let's all cross our
fingers and think Busey thoughts.
